Seven last minute ideas to show your kids love on Valentine’s Day

It’s Super Bowl Monday. You’re tired. And if you live in Richmond, Virginia or anywhere within a few hour’s drive, you’ve got a snow storm on the way. Aaaaand Friday is Valentine’s Day. Heck, you might be snowed in with the kids until Cupid comes. If you need some quick, last minute ideas to show love to your kids for the occasion, read on.

Take a deep breath. We’ve got you covered.

Here are 7 free or low cost ways to make a Valentine’s Day memory with your kids.

  1. Handwritten note.

Tell them why they’re special and what you’re enjoying about them at this age. This is a great tradition to repeat year after year. Or create an acrostic poem with what you love about them using each letter in their name.

  2. Little love notes.

Come up with things about them you admire and appreciate and write one per piece of paper. Then be creative about how you present them. Fill up a jar with slips of paper for them to pull out and read. Use post it notes with affirmations and arrange the notes to spell a secret message like “love” or “be mine.” Or hide them around the house.

  3. Create a coupon book.

Think about what they’re always asking for: Reading an extra book together, staying up for 10 more minutes, sleeping in your bed, one-on-one game night. Follow their interests and ways you like to connect with each other and voila!

  4. Love or heart themed snack or meal.

Grab heart-shaped donuts, use a cookie cutter to make heart shaped foods, or have a pink, red, and white themed treat.

  5. Scavenger hunt.

Instead of leaving Valentine’s treats out in one place, consider a scavenger hunt with clues leading to each next surprise or bag of candy.

  6. Themed movie night.

Watch a family-friendly rom com or kids’ movie with love as a strong central theme. Add snacks, blankets, and snuggles.

  7. Create or play together.

Work on a craft together - like a Valentine’s garland or a homemade card for a loved one. Use conversation hearts to make funny sentences or stories. Make a keepsake box for Valentine’s. Bake cookies, brownies, or rice krispy treats. Pick any activity you enjoy doing together. Look through old photos and share memories.
