Schedules upon schedules: What to do with all the school year information?

Young girl next to a back-to-school command center with school schedules

Excitement is in the air. Kids are receiving postcards from new teachers, labeling school supplies, thinking about new clothes - and dreading packing lunches. Summer goes by in a blink, and you’re suddenly handed scores of important papers to review, reference, sign and return. Holy screaming trees, Batman!

What do you do with all of the information you’ll surely need at some point in the school year to manage the chaos? There’s a mental load of invisible labor necessary to answer all the questions about schedules, keep folks catching the right buses at the right time, and help them decide to pack or buy lunch tomorrow.

Take a deep breath. We’ve got you covered.

We will share an idea to display important school and activity information so you know where to find the answers to pressing questions. And at the same time, you’re making the information visible to others so you can equip your partners, babysitters, and children to answer most questions for themselves. By creating a command center with back-to-school information, you save yourself the hassle of shuffling papers to find answers and you model a way to manage important information for your children, making the invisible load more visible and teaching them a valuable life skill.

May I suggest creating a family information command center?

You’ll want to think about:

  • Placement in your home

  • What content would be helpful to post, such as a combined calendar at-a-glance for your kiddos, cafeteria menus, athletic team game schedules, etc., and

  • How you can build ownership of the space with your partner and/or children

I have LOTS more to say about this in a free resource I’ve developed. If you share your name and email below, you’ll be provided with the link immediately.
