Living our values with end-of-year giving.
When I first conceptualized this business, I wrestled with how I would both support individuals and families with their immediate needs, while also addressing the upstream problems that get us to overwhelm in the first place. I arrived at the decision to use the income from my work to partner with organizations on the front lines of pressing challenges.
So as we close out my first quarter (or so) of business, supporting families on a variety of projects, I want to share the first three organizations to which we will donate. Sandy Hook Promise, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Giffords all focus on education, policy, and advocacy to reduce gun violence in our schools and communities.
As an elder millennial, I come from the original school shooting generation, remembering Columbine like yesterday. And as an American citizen and even more so as a mother, gun violence is a near constant worry. Such preventable violence has occurred in schools, grocery stores, movie theaters, music festivals, churches. No place, no community, and no family is immune unless we make serious policy changes.
The mental toll of living in America without such policy changes is a heavy burden. As if parenting isn’t stressful enough, the fear of something as preventable as gun violence impacting their loved ones adds an extra layer of stress to an already overwhelming role. It’s a stressor that doesn't simply disappear after a day of work or at the end of the week; it's something that many parents live with, every day, all year round.
Thus, our donations to Sandy Hook Promise, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Giffords are small but important steps toward reducing gun violence, easing the mental load on parents, and creating a safer environment for future generations. We invite you to join us in supporting these organizations as well, in hopes that our collective contributions bring us closer to a the safer America and world that our children deserve.
